Gospel: The Great Commission
Today marks the Seventh Sunday of Easter, and the Gospel account is lifted from St Matthew's.
The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they saw him, they worshipped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, "All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age."
The Gospel narrates to us the great commission that Jesus spoke to his disciples which summarizes the mission of the Church, to baptize all nations in the name of the Holy Trinity. But just like the early disciples, there are times that we worship Jesus, and then doubt our faith in him. Jesus assured us that all power on heaven and earth was given to him by God, so everything that he has commanded came from God, and not of his own accord.
The mission of the Church does not rest on the clergy and consecrated life alone. All baptized Catholics have the duty to share and live the Gospel. It is through prayers and the Eucharist and charity that we make Jesus to be seen in the world. The recurring theme in the readings of the Eastertide culminates in Jesus ascending to heaven to be glorified, to return to his rightful place in heaven after he has fulfilled the will of God.
Again, Jesus did not leave us. Jesus is ever present everywhere, because we follow his commandments. We believe in his divinity. We do things inside the Church that we don't really fully understand, then sometimes we doubt our faith. The early disciples also experienced the same. Doubt is the enemy of faith. It is through doubt that Eve was tempted to eat what has been forbidden.
As Jesus is glorified, let us all remind ourselves of the true story of Jesus in the synoptic gospels. Jesus is very righteous, merciful, compassionate, and a true God who sacrificed his life for our salvation. Let us believe in the goodness of God, and never doubt it. Jesus showed us how to love, how to care for our neighbors. And we all know love never fails.
