Gospel: Baptism of the Lord

The Baptism of the Lord tells us about Jesus who availed of Himself of a baptism He didn't need because of His nature as God and He never sinned, in order to share with the sinful nature of the humankind He is determined to save, in order to die for our sins in our place later on.

It also tells us another thing about baptismal; that once we were baptized, everything becomes new and we are all a new creation. Our past is gone, and a new beginning awaits. Baptism therefore is the first step of forgiveness. It is also the source of the efficacy of all the other sacraments.

Baptism tells us about the humility of the Lord, as well. This was shown when St John the Baptist thought that Jesus will baptize him, but instead, it was Him who wants to be baptized. Jesus surrendered himself to the authority of Mosaic Law.

When Jesus was baptized, the heavens suddenly opened and the Spirit of God descended to Him like a Dove, and the voice of the Father came afterwards saying, "This is my beloved Son. Listen to Him." This exact scene is the representation of the Holy Trinity: Jesus as the Son, the Holy Spirit descending like a dove, and the voice of the Father coming down from heaven. This is the fulfillment of the Trinitarian formula of baptismal.

The Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord also marks the end of the Christmastide or the Christmas season, so we can now all tear down our Christmas decorations. It is also considered the second Epiphany of the Lord when God the Father revealed the Lord Jesus as His only begotten Son.
